AI and the Future of Journalism
The promise of AI for journalism lies in its potential to streamline news production, enhance data-driven investigations, and expedite processes like fact-checking, transcription, and translation. These supposed benefits come with concerns about the risks AI may pose to journalists and the media ecosystem as a whole. Beyond fears about misinformation and biases entrenched in AI systems, there is unease about AI replacing journalists – whose work often feeds into the development of AI models in the first place – and worry that the rapid pace of technological advancement could widen the gap between well-resourced media organisations and smaller outlets which may struggle to adapt.
Join us at King's College, University of Cambridge, to hear from a panel of experts, including: BBC Presenter Geeta Guru-Murthy, Bloomberg Columnist Parmy Olson, Jessica Cecil from Digital Catapult and the Trusted News Initiative, Tomasz Hollanek, Research Fellow at the Leverhulme Cetre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI). Gillian Tett, Journalist and Provost of King's College, will be modearting the panel discussion.
Key questions will include: What does it mean to be a journalist in the age of generative AI? What new responsibilities arise? How can media organisations, universities, and civil society support journalists in navigating these changes? The panel will also discuss how training on responsible AI adoption can help journalism students and professionals. The event will launch an expanded AI and Responsible Journalism Toolkit, developed by CFI researchers to guide journalists in adopting AI responsibly, participating in tech development discussions, and building resilience against future technological shifts.
Attendees are invited to stay for an informal drinks reception following the panel discussion.
Please note, this is an in-person event only and will not be live streamed.
